Two Questions and an Advertisement

Shannon is hosting a backwards WFMW today at Rocks in My Dryer. I'll take advantage of this opportunity to tap the wisdom of the internets.

  1. Read-Aloud Suggestions? My husband reads to the children from a novel every night. Thus far they have read Charlotte's Web, Stewart Little, The Trumpeter Swan, Doctor Dolittle, The Just So Stories, and they are currently finishing up the Little House series. We haven't decided what to tackle next. Any suggestions?

  2. Preschool Prayer Songs? We begin "preschool" every day with a prayer. I have only just realized that a song is a good way to do this and get the kids really involved. Cousin F in particular gets into hand motions and spontaneous riffs on well-known songs. We have been singing "He Has the Whole World in His Hands" and "This is the Day." Does anyone know any good Christian songs that a 1, 3 and 4 yo would be able to sing?

  3. Photographs of Nuns? Sr. Mary Martha and her cohert of sisters are organizing a Nun Beauty No Contest to show all of the good work that nuns do around the world. Sr. Mary Martha asked me to advertise this for her, and since when can I say no to a nun? Even in my 1980s nearly secular Catholic school we learned that much! You can read more about the rules (or lack thereof) at her blog.

Try Steve Green's CD "Hide Em In Your Heart" (the first one is best). I knew it was a keeper when my two year old walked into the kitchen and proudly proclaimed, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!"

For read-aloud books, try any of the Lamplighter Rare Collector's Series (http://www.lamplighterpublishing.com/). Many are good for any age and they all have such great lessons in them. For younger children, take a look at Giant Killer or Teddy's Button. Those are both favorites at my house.

I echo the hide em in your heart, as well as lamplighter. We love love LOVE lamplighter. Chronicles of Narnia are good ones to read, too. lemme get back to you on the kids songs. I have a host up my sleeve. did you try the fruit of the spirit song? we may need to exchange phone numbers so I can call you to sing them! :)

My suggestions are not too original but have worked for our family. We love the "Hide Em in Your Heart" video from Steve Green.

My husband also reads at night. Right now we are in Narnia. You can also check out Sonlight.com and look at their suggested read alouds for whatever age you are interested in and check the books out at the library.

We sing, "My God is big, so strong and so mighty" with hand motions. We also just go the Awesome God CD from Sovereign Grace ministries and I am blown away by the great thelogy my kids are singing!

I just posted about read-alouds and got some great comments last week. Also, totally second, third, fourth, whatever it's up to now, on the Hide 'em in Your Heart!

We sing lots of songs in our house too - "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam," "Deep and Wide" (with lots of movement), "Jesus Loves the Little Children," "This Little Light of Mine" (with lots of hand movements), and "My God is So Big" (with movement).

We go over one Bible verse a week using this incredible book called My ABC Bible Verses - it's wonderful! Each verse builds on the previous ones, and by the end of the book, the kids really have a good sense of the Holy Spirit, glorifying God, etc. Also, it's unbelievable how easy it is for young kids to learn the verses - I've been amazed!
